Doc’s Interview: Josh Thompson of Roman Street

Posted on 07 October 2009 by Valso

Mobile’s Roman Street will be playing at the Saenger Theater this Thursday for its International Jazz Jam, along with their mentor Tonic Strings and New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz Band.  We were able to talk with Josh Thompson, who formed the band with his brother Noah, and bassist Jason Sikes and percussionists Daniel Brett and Nik White.

Doc: How did Tonic Strings mentor you and what other influences/teachers did you have?
JT: Tonic Strings truly exemplify what it means to be a musician. Not only have they affected how my brother and I play, but they have taught us that music is a lifelong pursuit and that we must always strive to be better. Other influences would have to be our parents, they have been incredibly supportive and we owe them so much.

Doc: What is Roman Street doing now in terms of touring and recording?
JT: Our latest cd, Amore, was released in March as has been greatly received. We have plans to make a Christmas cd in the future, and also plan to begin working on our new album next summer. In the mean time we have been touring as much as possible, but mostly playing locally.

Doc: What’s next for Roman Street?
JT: Our next milestone will be when we play with another of our favorite musicians , Jesse Cook, at the Saenger Theatre on January 21st. He is a phenomenal guitarist with an equally incredible band, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to open for him.

Doc: Any advice for young (or old) Coastal Alabamans interested in jazz?

JT: My advice would be the same advice Tonic Strings gave to me, that your music (of any style) is something to be shared with world and to pursue music as a lifelong passion.
