When former Mobile radio D.J. Shane McBryde wrote his article about his escapades with Steve Nodine we posted it after much debate because – even though we had concerns about his credibility – it was sent to us and the last thing we wanted to do was “hush things up” as we have criticized other media for doing.
In retrospect, there wasn’t much newsworthy in it except Nodine smoked pot (surprise), D.J.s smoke pot (gasp…you’re kidding!), and Nodine used the n-word once.
But obviously the story got McBryde a ton of hits because now he runs a blog focused on Moble and Alabama politics – even though he lives in central Florida.
He has since given us such revelations as:
- Subsequent details of the Nodine case after they are reported by other media
- McBryde was once too drunk to do an emcee job
- Alabama’s governor’s race is a “Monkey Trial”
McBryde posts his blogs on sites where he gets paid by the viewer.
What started for us as a modicum of sympathy for McBryde has turned to a feeling of “ewww” since he is profiting off of every problem in Mobile and the state that he can publicize.

I’m a little shocked that you would write such an article, suggesting I’m profiting off the articles you mentioned. Neither of those sites pay anything that closely approaches any kind of money. It’s a hobby, as it is for most of the contributors, not a job.
Furthermore, I write about the things I know, which is what I’ve always been told you should write about. And, I’ve had to find someway to deal with and confront the demons of my past, and writing about seems to help.
Although it still stings a little, I guess I’m getting used to how mean you all can be, back home. Believe me, I write what I write for me, normally only handful people ever read posts.
When the Nodine thing went down, obviously for me a lot of them bad old days came rushing back. So, I wrote about it, and never imagined the paper would pick it up, and my entire home town would end up reading it, practically. It caused me far pain than any renumeration I’ve recieved.
Except for blogging, I’m out of media now. My wife and I are both going back to school, raising our twin 5 year olds and getting on with our lives. I don’t write for profit. What I’ve earned off writing these little stories can’t pay the internet bill. I write for me, like some people paint or build model cars, if you find it that, “icky” then I suppose, don’t read it.
Anyway, take care,
Shane McBryde
