So we may be biased – but we remember in the 6th grade “taping” (for you youngsters see Wikipedia: cassette tape) entire Dire Straits and Pink Floyd albums late Saturday nights off the Zew in the early ‘80s. There was never been any doubt that 92Zew was the best radio station on the Gulf.

Yes – we have heard Weezer on 4 consecutive listens recently. But there is a new dawn with the show 92New which started this week.
92New is on 8-9pm – it can be heard live or via streaming – but the songs are also on the website with a chance to vote on them: http://92zew.net/wordpress/?page_id=3035 < check that out.
We called up the hostess Emily to ask her for the story on 92New:
“The Zew audience has always be very receptive to new music. There are so many great acts across the country that folks haven’t heard of. With 92 New, we are hoping to steer our audience in the right direction by pointing out some artists they should check out.
Almost all of the music is stuff that the staff here at the Zew is really into. It’s also nice to be able to take a chance on something that no one had heard of but you have a lot of faith in.
Music Director Lee Ann Watters had the task of getting all of that together. She has a great ear which works for me because we have similar taste.
In regards to mixing in more local music, I am sure that is something we will approach down the road. There certainly is a plethora of talent in Mobile. We do feature local music throughout the day and put the spot light on local artists at 2:51 every afternoon on Area 251.
Those broadcasts are also available on our website, 92zew.net, so if you miss one, no worries! It’ll be on the site.”
It Sounded like she also may have called one of the Mod Mobilian writers a “cracker” or “crackpot” under her breath.
WZEW is not WWOZ or WTUL – they are privately owned and some people forget businesses actually have to pay the bills (not everyone has as exquisite musical taste as our local critics). And if we didn’t have the ZEW, life would be poorer in Mobile indeed. Remember one of Birmingham’s alternative stations recently bit the dust. Don’t take the ZEW for granted. Listen to 92New if you haven’t. So thank you Zew Krewe – Sound of Mobile – and please more 92New and local music. We love you. – Mod Mobilian
