The August 3rd meeting of the Mobile Bay Group Sierra Club will feature a program with discussion by Aaron Viles, Campaign Director of Gulf Restoration Network.
Aaron leads Gulf Restoration Network’s campaigns to ensure sustainable fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico, to work on climate change issues in the Gulf, and to protect important habitats, such as cypress forests throughout the Gulf region. He has a B.S. in Biology with an emphasis in Conservation, Ecology and Evolution from the University of Washington and worked for many years as a Campaign Director/Organizer for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group.
The Gulf Restoration Network is responding to the BP oil disaster in the Gulf by: independently monitoring the clean up and containment efforts, advocating for a more effective and transparent response from government and industry, and advocating for the creation of a Citizens Advisory Committee to allow the tourism, indigenous, fishing and environmental communities to watchdog the oil industry in the Gulf of Mexico. GRN is also engaging with Navy Secretary Ray Mabus as the Obama Administration crafts a new Gulf Coast restoration plan in the next few months. Aaron hopes that where possible Secretary Mabus will bundle together existing restoration plans that were in need of funding prior to the BP disaster.
