Business: The Blind Mule

The Blind Mule is tight with Mod Mobilian – but we still have to say – they deserve it.  The Mule has featured young local artists and musicians when no one else did – and is in a large degree responsible for the Mobile Cultural Revival. Congratulations Blind Mule!  www.myspace.com/theblindmule

Organization: Gulf Coast Ethnic & Heritage Jazz Festival

The GCEH Jazz Fest just completed its 12th year – and continues to try and keep alive one of Mobile’s most important traditions – jazz.  It holds it’s centerpiece free concert in August – previously in Bienville Square – but the venue or date may change in the future so the weather is not such an issue.  It also has its Youth Workshop, Poetry Slam, Pro-Am Jam Session, and plans on holding more events throughout the year!  www.gcehjazzfest.com

  1. Lynda Says:

Jane Shaw taught MANY of Mobile’s artists when they were children (Randy Moberg, Fred Marchman, Gin Taylor, myself and many others) and instilled a life-long love of art. Those who did not pursue their art nevertheless were better off for her teaching. It’s a great thing that she has been given this award!

  2. Lisa Says:

Jane Shaw taught me when I was 12-15 years old in her home. She was a wonderful teacher – patient, kind, and loving. I have wondered over the years how she was and what she was doing. I have very fond memories of her.
