Review: Galactic

Text, Photos & Video by Tim Borland

Galactic never ceases to entertain, building a solid reputation built on sweat equity. The band has retained their musical chops year to year, performance to performance. This is a credit to the experienced musicians who have had years on the road to hone their instrument techniques on the road. The mixture of horns, woodwinds, and rock instruments envelops the crowd with sounds both old and new.

Galactic has always been known for having guest vocalists. Last year the band appeared with Corey Glover of Living Colour. This year the band appeared with guest vocalist Maggie Koerner. The change resulted in drastic setlist changes, like exchanging “Cult of Personality” for  the James Brown favorite “Its A Man’s World.

The New Orleans based jazz fusion act treated Mobile to its newest incarnation as a part of Mobile’s Mardi Gras season. The packed house danced and cheered for Galactic to continue. Saxophonist Ben Ellman surprised the crowd by whipping out his harmonica for a version of “Bongo Joe,” a crowd favorite from the band’s 2003 album Ruckus which had not been performed in some time.

Galactic is a band that rarely if ever disappoints live. Those who have not yet made it out to see these New Orleans regulars have no idea what an exciting time they are missing.
