Borland on Desserts: The Hungry Owl
by Tim Borland
There are a number of great independent restaurant choices in the Mobile area. Diners in the WeMo area have listed The Hungry Owl as a favorite for many years. The business has established a solid reputation based upon consistency and high culinary standards.
Mod Mobilian interviewed owner Tony Nicholas in depth several years ago, about his experiences cooking alongside legends like Emeril Lagasse as well as The Hungry Owl’s television appearance on Man vs Food. The restaurant’s success has been by no mistake, as evidenced by the excellent staff and delicious food.
In the time since our original food review, there have been several new additions. There is now a wrap around bar with indoor and outdoor seating. A stage in the patio area hosts local and regional musicians weekly. The seating areas have been expanded to accommodate more guests, and The Hungry Owl food truck has been seen at many local events such as SouthSounds Festival and Aerofest.
There are also several charming aspects of the building’s ambiance that have drawn repeat customers. The comfortable leather booths are inviting, and paintings from local artists adorn the walls. As one might expect, there are owls everywhere, in keeping with the restaurant theme. More unique features include a dog park for guests to keep their canine pals during meals and a play area for children.
The Hungry Owl will soon be making even more improvements with the introduction of an exciting new menu. Though still in development, Mod Mobilian has been given a sneak peak at the upcoming revised dessert menu.
The Hungry Owl’s Banana Moonpie Pudding has become a guest favorite, especially during the Mardi Gras season. Nicholas invented the dish himself by incorporating a new spin on an old favorite. Experiencing this dessert is practically a rite of passage for every Mobilian.
One of the newest additions to the dessert menu is the Bananas Foster Cheesecake. Drizzled lightly with caramel, this delectable dessert is a thrill for the taste buds. Due to the popularity of the dish, it will be prominently featured on the new menu.
