Interview: Goodbye June

Fresh off the release of their new EP entitled Danger In The Morning, up and coming band Goodbye June has high aspirations for their current fall tour. The southern musicians have received nearly three million plays of their track “Oh No” on Spotify. In addition, the band was also featured on Showtime’s promotional video for the boxing match between Leo Santa Cruz and Carl Frampton.

In 2012, Goodbye June signed with Cotton Valley Music, located in Nashville, Tenn. The band then signed to major label Interscope Records earlier this year. Well-received performances at Forecastle Festival, Live on the Green, Louder Than Life Festival, and at European tour dates have helped to generate buzz for the group and their new release, which can be found at the links below.

Goodbye June’s current tour will bring them to many nearby cities such as New Orleans, La., Athens, Ga., and Oxford, Miss. including four tour dates  in Alabama. The tour appears very promising with the presence of tour mates Whiskey Myers, The Struts, and none other than ZZ Top at select dates.

Goodbye June hopes to have a full length release out by 2017. The band created its name as a memorial to the month the brother of band member Tyler Baker passed away. The brother was tragically killed in a car accident while on military leave. The Mod Crew spoke with vocalist Landon Milbourn about the band’s current tour and what inspires he and bandmates Brandon Qualkenbush and Tyler Baker  inside the studio and during live performances.

Goodbye June Q&A

1) How does spirituality factor into your music, or your decisions while song writing?

“Subconsciously it makes it into the music at times. We were raised in the church and that’s where we learned to move people with music. Music is spiritual. They go hand in hand quite well,” Milbourn explains.

2) Do you consider your raw vocals an essential part of Goodbye June’s sound? Is that how you bring emotion into recordings such as “Darlin” ?

“The emotion of the song guides you and at times you will hear the ‘gut wrenching’ vocal or other times a more subtle approach like the front half of Darlin’,” Milbourn expresses.

3) Are you proud to be Southern musicians? Do you think it affects your careers or fanbase in any way?

“Of course we are proud to be where we are from. It has definitely helped shape a part of our sound. You can hear the southern rock vibe shining through,” Milbourn insists.

4) You have slow burners and upbeat songs as well. Do you like the dynamics between those extremes of songwriting?

“You have got to have variety in your catalogue, otherwise it gets stale. Keeping the listener more on their toes is way more intriguing rather than the same type of song over and over. To us, that’s boring,” Milbourn said.
