The Fourth Annual Witches Ball will occur on Oct. 22 this year. Presented by the Raven’s Nook, the event is a celebration of the witches new year, which is also represented as the last harvest of the year. Also known as Samhain, the occasion marks the beginning of the end, or the start of the darker half of the year. Samhain is one of four traditional Gaelic holidays, widely observed throughout Ireland and Scotland.

Like last year’s event, this year is hosted by The Blind Mule at 57 North Claiborne St. Tickets are $25 per person which includes dinner and one free drink. A cash bar will be available. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance. The event runs from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Costumes are mandatory for the event, and the event is for 21 and older only. There will be entertainment for guests, such as food, music, and decorations. Tarot readings will be provided by Gypsy LeeLee. Last year’s event featured a spooky DJ in the upstairs Attic area. A catered buffet was kept full all night for guests.

There are a lot of interesting people who will be at the event, such as pagans, Wiccans, and people who like costumes and want to have Halloween fun. An open mind is probably a good thing to arrive with. For example, in 2015 the event featured an Ancestor Shrine. Guests could light a candle on a table in order to honor their deceased ancestors. The ritual is a common spiritual practice among many pagans.
The Witches Ball is an excellent way to enjoy the Halloween season, regardless of spiritual practices. Mobilians can come out and join the fun, food, and costumes at a great independent downtown venue. Check back soon for interviews with The Raven’s Nook and their patrons.
