Autumn Aural Affairs 2017

Text by Tim Borland

Hey music festival lovers!  Although the seasons have changed it is not too late to enjoy a few awesome autumn aural affairs before winter arrives. Here we have mentioned three vastly different social events distributed across the Gulf Coast within a few hours of us over the next several weeks. Each festival has its own character as well as benefits listed in our descriptions below:

Many Mobilians will of course be enjoying the free Ten Sixty Five Festival in downtown Mobile, Ala. the weekend of Sept. 29 – Oct. 1. The free festival is returning to the Azalea city with a great lineup of Blackberry Smoke, Cage The Elephant, Judah and the Lion, Wet Willie, and St. Paul and the Broken Bones among many others. Local acts like Jonesy’s Crowned Jewelz will be rounding out the three day event additional stages.

There is no camping and few hippies, but its free and has some great indie bands giving area residents another great reason to support independent businesses downtown. Many attendees will be looking for the festival mascot, the Party Animal who pops up in the crowd and on stages during the performances. Mod Mobilian has captured some great photos and videos from Ten Sixty Five in 2015 and 2016, and is currently downtown capturing shots of the 2017 festivities. Coverage from 2016 with live video of Trombone Shorty is linked below along with photos from 2015 as well as the schedule for 2017:

Those in search of a true camping jamband experience will be gearing up for Suwannee Hulaween the weekend of Oct. 27 – Oct. 29. The yearly experience always features three nights of String Cheese Incident, in addition to this year’s selections of Bassnectar, Ween, Griz, Damian Marley, The Disco Biscuits, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Nightsweats, and Portugal. The Man among many other great festival circuit acts.

Situated in the scenic Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida a few hours down I-10, the Halloween event will certainly bring many costumed music lovers to the magical campgrounds surrounding the black water of the Suwannee River. Tier 3 advance tickets are currently $259, but hurry as prices will increase to $279 once that allotment sells out, and then to $295 at the gate the weekend of the event. Tickets include camping passes for three days, and parking is available for vehicles as well as RV’s.

Suwannee Hulaween is one of the best festival events of the year. Boasting not only a stellar lineup and unique venue, the event also features numerous outdoor activities to enjoy like tubing and hiking. Mod photographer Jason Burglar will be on the scene once again to document the 2017 experience. Below is a link to his review of Hulaween 2016:

For those who enjoy a more urban vibe to the scenic beauty of the forest, there is a non-camping option also a few hours down I-10. Voodoo Music + Arts Experience will take place in none other than New Orleans, La. Also occurring Oct. 27-29, the festival features more mainstream acts for 2017 like Foo Fighters, The Killers, and Kendrick Lamar. Electronic acts like LCD Soundsystem and DJ Snake will make sure crowds are dancing into the night.

With the bustling city and the sights of the French Quarter nearby, there will be plenty of late night activity to wander into after the music fades for the evening. With numerous voodoo shops, palm readers, steam punks, and vampires scattered among the narrow streets year round, the city is obviously a location well suited to Halloween festivities. Haunted tours are certain to be booked solid, and Bourbon Street will be jampacked with revelers as usual.

The festival itself includes a number of carnival rides, art installations, and other attractions to entertain guests. The current weekend ticket price of $155 plus fees does not include lodging, Voodoo attendees will need to check nearby hotels. Many locations may already be fully booked, so call in advance for reservations. Day passes for the concerts are also available. Music lovers with prior experience may opt to find public transportation or taxis to the New Orleans City Park to avoid parking costs and long walks to entrances. Mod Mobilian has been documenting Voodoo since 2012, and will bring more great photos and quotes from this year’s event.
