Spring Festival Preview 2018

Oh yeah, music fans! Its that time again, festival season approaches with the first major events popping up this coming March. Mod Mobilian covers music events all across the Southeast U.S.A., and 2018’s festival season will be no exception. Here are just a few of the great upcoming events happening within the the Southeast this spring:

BUKU Music & Art Project may only be two days, but it packs quite a one-two punch as a result. Held at Mardi Gras World in New Orleans, La. on March 9-10, 2018, stages such as the Float Den can be quite surreal as the audience is surrounded by the colorful display of Mardi Gras floats. This year’s lineup promises to amaze with electronic heavy hitters like MGMT, Migos, SZA, Virtual Self, Rezz,Bassnectar, Bonobo, Little Dragon, Boregore, and plenty more.

As much an art festival as a music festival, BUKU hosts a number of installations, graffiti displays, and up cycled sculptures. Food vendors often feature local seafood, and there is even a VIP steam boat S. S. BUKU docked next to the main stage providing great views and exclusive perks.

In addition to the large outdoor main stage, the indoor stages provide a variety of environments to enjoy the music. Even though there is no camping, the festival’s location just a short ride from the French Quarter will allow guests to enjoy themselves all night long. The lack of camping and shortened number of days also makes the festival very inexpensive – tickets for both days are currently $190, with day passes going for $100 while supplies last.

Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival is one of the most exciting new festivals to spring up in recent years. Held in Okeechobee, Florida on March 1-4, 2018, their stellar lineup just cannot be ignored by those who have love for festival favorite bands. With STS9, Flaming Lips, The Arcade Fire, Bassnectar, and more, there is a little something for everyone, and a lot of everything for those who like festivals.

While a little further into the panhandle of Florida for those who live further West, this event is a camping festival which helps cut costs. Camping will be included in the price of the ticket. Rumor has it that the backing band for Snoop Dogg’s set may very well be the famous act The Roots. Fans can enjoy the music from the white sand beaches and lakeside bars of the event venue. More great bands like Slightly Stoopid, Big Gigantic, Tipper, Thievery Corporation, and Trombone Shorty add plenty of value to the weekend ticket price which is currently $289 plus fees.

Live Oak, Florida is a favorite among concert goers all over the Gulf Coast. The Spirit of Suwannee Music Park has a magical quality that just cannot be denied, with its shady live oaks covered in spanish moss. One of the biggest events held at the venue every spring is Wanee Festival, which will occur April 19-21, 2018. Originally hosted by The Allman Bros. Band and their associated side acts. While Gregg Allman’s spirit will always be a part of the Wanee experience, other experience jambands will take the reins in the legend’s absence.

The event will be in good hands with legend Phil Lesh. Having stepped off the Dead touring machine for a rest, the performance will represent one of the handful of instances Lesh currently performs per year, and should not be missed. More great headliners include two nights of Widespread Panic, St. Paul and the Broken Bones, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, and North Mississippi Allstars to name a few. Cover act Pink Talking Fish will be doing an Allman Bros tribute set entitled “Pink Talking Fish Tied to the Whipping Post.”

Camping is of course included at Live Oak, and unlike many festivals there are real bathrooms and free showers in the campgrounds. There is plenty of shade, and trees around the stages allow fans to watch the concert from hammocks. There is a cafe, general store, and tons of activities such as yoga and a ferris wheel all a short walk from the campgrounds and RVs. Tickets for the Wanee weekend passes are currently $219.95, which is a great value for a 3 day camping festival.

One of the most missed festivals from the southeast was the always great Wakarusa held on Mulberry Mountain in Ozark, Ark. While that festival has gone the way of the Sasquatch which was its mascot, there has emerged another great event in the same location entitled Backwoods Music Festival, which takes advantage of the pristine mountain setting. This year’s edition will occur April 20-22, 2018.

Definitely a festival for festival goers, headliners are underground all stars like STS9, Griz, Andy Frasco, Papadosio, The Floozies, and Zoogma among others. Backwoods definitely leaning more to the electronic side, for those wanting to get their glow stick and dance on.

Of course Mod Mobilian could not discuss Spring music festivals within the Southeast without mentioning Mobile’s own SouthSounds Music Festival. The event provides a platform for independent musicians to be heard by fresh audiences, and draws regional acts from several states away to Alabama and the Azalea City. The 2018 incarnation will occur April 13-15, and will fill downtown Mobile with music fans eager to support the independent businesses which serve as the venues for the concert series. The eagerly anticipated lineup announcement will be released along with ticket prices via an official announcement on February 21, 2018.
