by T. Ryan Borland

SouthSounds Festival 2018 is returning to the downtown Mobile, Ala. on April 13 – 15, 2018. The recent lineup announcement is arguably one of the strongest in the history of the festival with over 70 artists and headliners like Of Montreal, Corey Smith, J. Roddy Walston and the Business, Dumpstaphunk, Boyfriend, and many more notable Southeastern musicians. Regional favorites such as Sweet Crude and local mainstays such as Underhill Family Orchestra will also return to SouthSounds. What has not changed is what a huge bargain the weekend is for music lovers. Currently, the early bird three day general admission wristband price is $25. Those who intend to see Corey Smith at Soul Kitchen will need to buy a Gold level weekend pass for $45. The awesome VIP packages are only $90 and include the festival pass, access to reserved VIP viewing areas, complementary food from local restaurants, complementary beer, a festival t-shirt, and a souvenir VIP laminate. Two VIP passes can be bought together for the discounted price of $150 while supplies last. Savvy concert goers should take advantage of these early bird prices before they increase on April 1st.

Many of these artists have been covered by Mod Mobilian at other events over the years. Readers can explore the photos and review of Of Montreal performing at Alabama Music Box on December 1, 2012: Of Montreal Recap 12/01/2012 The band has also headlined well received performances in the past at nearby Soul Kitchen Music Hall. Formerly a part of the second wave of original Elephant 6 Collective bands, the Athens, Ga. band is legendary among indie music fans.

Meanwhile, Mod Mobilian has also featured Dumpstaphunk prominently in the coverage of Wanee Festival 2014: Dumpstaphunk @ Wanee 2014 This vintage review also includes exclusive photos of the late Gregg Allman in addition to Dumpstaphunk. Music road warriors will likely attend SouthSounds in Mobile the weekend prior to making their way to Live Oak, Fla. for Wanee Festival on April 19-21, 2018.  Dumpstaphunk is helmed by Ivan Neville, an organist and multi instrumentalist who is nephew to members of The Neville Brothers. This New Orleans, La. funk outfit has built a solid reputation and following along the jam circuit, and has also headlined performances in the Azalea City at Soul Kitchen in years past.

With so many notable bands present, those who have not yet attended SouthSounds Festival have many exceptional reasons to do so in 2018. The three day passes include cover free admission to several independent venues, bars, and clubs within the downtown area for the weekend, which means the ticket virtually pays for itself. Exploring multiple venues is part of the appeal of the SouthSounds, and discovering new musicians and supporting independent business is all a major part of this non-profit event.

“With the support of so many people, SouthSounds has evolved into a signature event for Downtown Mobile, bringing music fans, music industry tastemakers and some of the South’s hottest emerging acts and legendary independent artists together in a unique, intimate setting. We love the opportunity to introduce the Gulf Coast to amazing artists that folks may not have heard of before, while at the same time introducing these world-class artists to the unique charm of Mobile. We’re incredibly excited about what we have in store for you this year!” festival organizer Gabe Fleet shares.
