This weekend July 13-15 is the inaugural MOB Music Festival in downtown Mobile, Ala. The concert event is headlined by local favorites Underhill Family Orchestra, and will feature over thirty bands in a free performance for the Azalea City community. The music will occur in Cathedral Square from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I repeat – the event is free to the public. For those desiring a more extensive experience, VIP packages will be available at the Will Call tent in Cathedral Square for only $25. VIP perks include: no cover charge all weekend at Kazoola, Merry Widow, or Tag, half price entry to the Soul Kitchen Saturday After Party, penny liquor topper with daiquiri purchase at O’Dalys, and artist meet and greet photo opportunities.

With SouthSounds Festival, the nearby Hangout Festival, and the free Ten Sixty Five Festival in the fall, is there room in Mobile, Ala. and the Gulf Coast area for more festivals? The answer is an abundant “YES!” The more music events within the city, the more the downtown scene will become known as a great location for burgeoning artists to reach new listeners. With other events like Sloss Festival in Birmingham, Ala. July 14-15 and Forecastle Festival in Louisville, Ky July 13-15 this month, it is only fitting that Mobile would have its own summer music event to entice audiophiles to partake in downtown’s great independent businesses.

Underhill Family Orchestra need no introduction in the Port City. Fresh off the heels of their newest release “Tell Me That You Love Me,” the band will be performing both new and familiar older material for their home city. Also performing are acts such as J.Simon,  Lauren Murphy and the Psychedelics, Johnny Hayes and the Loveseats, and Yeah, Probably representing a wide variety of genres. Even for those unfamiliar with the band names, the event is a great excuse to get downtown and perhaps discover some new sounds.

The only way Mobile can have such unique awesome events such as MOB Music festival is if people attend. Having a vibrant downtown community requires participation, and everyone can contribute to the city’s ambience by attending a show or purchasing a meal or beverage from an independent business. Let’s make Mobile exciting by being active in the events our city has to offer.
