Larger rooms, smaller perspective By Kevin Lee The years unfurl from east to west in our town. The bay on one side, Mobile expanded like its nation, chasing the setting sun. So as you move through the neighborhoods, time flows past in the architecture and historic city limits. Cross Broad Street and the War of 1812 has ended. [...] Continue Reading

Last night I logged into Facebook to find this on my news feed: I AM AN UN-APOLOGETIC AMERICAN: “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands; one nation under GOD indivisible with liberty and justice for all.” I grew up reciting this every morning in school; it is [...] Continue Reading

Mud ain’t all I smell By Kevin Lee Mobile Bay’s brown waves are thanks to the tons of silt rolling through the delta each year, but if you’re familiar with our history, you’d know the dirt might as well be flowing from the offices of our civic leaders. Why, sleepy little Mobile? Corrupt? Just a bit. Enough that [...] Continue Reading

Some, claiming a terrorist attack, rushed for the door. Others, like Mod Vowel, won't leave a beer behind and once the brew was secured, headed for the mass exodus into Oakleigh. With the entire building evacuated and tears of joy (ok really it was the pepper spray) running down folks faces, the story came to light about the accidental pepper spraying. Continue Reading

Bridging gaps with something greater By Kevin Lee Deanna’s on my mind every day now. When I watch the news, when I read the paper, she arises. It’s been 14 years since she died, 14 years since she was fatally bludgeoned in the late afternoon, just inside the family business south of the Loop area. Along with her [...] Continue Reading

Let us start, as usual, by saying that we ask the reader to take a deep breath and think about the subject with an open mind and common sense. Some people’s natural reaction to groups like “End Panhandling” is to attack the group as heartless. They respond “let them panhandle.” But this is the height of stupidity – [...] Continue Reading

We’ll Have a Gay Old Time by Kevin Lee “Have a yabba dabba doo time, a dabba doo time, we’ll have a gay old time.” Hurrah, huzzah, my marriage counts again! When a federal judge struck down California’s gay marriage ban as discriminatory, it validated my own legal union. Sure, I’m straight; I’ve got the seared eardrums to prove [...] Continue Reading

Mod Mobilian may come under question (or worse) for publishing the communications of the assumed identity Robyn Goodall with the person portraying themselves on Facebook as Stephen Nodine – so we thought an explanation is in order. The writer behind Robyn Goodall makes no excuses for the fact that she goes after suspected perpetrators of domestic violence. She has [...] Continue Reading

We are sympathetic for young Ms. Hayes who, in her innocence and naievete, was taken in by the smooth-talking lothario, Mr. Masters. Despite this we feel we feel the evidence of Mr. Masters' philandering cannot be embargoed. Mr. Masters is a danger to the virtue of Mobile Bay's young women - this must be made known so that they may protect themselves. Continue Reading

what is tough about this is that Priest, whoever he is, has talent. And he is reflecting social issues. Buildings that the city or private owners don't seem to care about can be turned into an artistic form of social commentary. What is so wrong with that? Continue Reading

Years ago, as a founder and board member of WHIL, I made a tour of other public radio stations. I spent a few days in Cambridge and was shocked at the blind arrogance directed towards me as a "Southerner". Now, mind you, my hair was kinkier and longer than Jimi Hendrix's, my attire and politics were vintage Fugs and Allen Ginsberg, my heritage Puerto Rican. Yet, here I was listening to the stupidest comments in the world from the supposedly smartest people on the planet, who apparently couldn't see me for who I was. Continue Reading
