With retail carnage sprawled across the land, things are official: Yuletide season has arrived. Which means I’ve got a lot of work to do. There’s catapults to be tested, weaponry to stockpile, cavalry to drill. After all you can’t wage a War on Christmas if you’re soft. Continue Reading

"Southern culture has its pleasures and pain, graces and sins that confound and fascinate. Of the foremost, one seems to peel back the covers on the South’s id and ego with the greatest flair and we’re at its apex right now. College football is a mania that grabs people across socio-economic lines and has for over a hundred years in the South. It takes politics, cuisine, religion, you name it, and stuffs it all into one big bird for a multi-month feast that peaks near Thanksgiving." Continue Reading

"It was the 1980s and accommodations were evidently on a par with a Banana Republic. I kept looking for machine guns and fatigues, waiting for a wave of rebel Azalea Trail Maids to pull bombs from beneath their hoop skirts and Col. Dixie to announce his coup d'etat. Or would that be 'coup de Dixie Dog?'" Continue Reading

Mod Mobilian was intrigued to hear from a renowned local body painter that the big new thing for Mobile this year was body painting (body art). She told us of a group of 5 “clean cut” female South Alabama students who got full body paints, drove to New Orleans wearing towels and walked down Bourbon Street wearing [...] Continue Reading

Great art resonates, across genre and form, locale and era. Its ripples reverberate in ways sometime unseen and take the art into all corners of the culture and human experience. Even in this annual time of harvest and hauntings we find a pair of monumental literary works etched into the season. Both are prescient and broadly themed far beyond their time, lending themselves to reinterpretation and recreation well past their original intent. Continue Reading

Another Halloween morsel for the Trick-or-Treat bag: I was raised under the glaring light of the Lord so of course I was drawn to the darkness. My youthful fascination with goblins and ghouls was a natural step from the supernatural basis of my family’s fundamentalist Christianity and stories filled with sulfur pits and plagues, fire raining from the skies, angels of death seeping through the streets of Cairo. I will be at The Blind Mule every Monday night for, "The Real Funky Deal", which is an open mic night dedicated to hip hop, funk, soul and jazz. I'm gonna provide an opportunity for artists and musicians to showcase their skills on the mic. I'm also inviting people to join in and bring an instrument. I did this in Nashville on a Sunday with two local MC's and we ended up with a ten piece band with some of the hottest session players around playing funky jams and the MC's would flow all over the top.
